  4.     RETIRED. Alfred C. Haynes, 60, veteran United Airlines pilot
  5. hailed as a hero for saving the lives of 184 passengers and crew
  6. members when he crash-landed a crippled DC-10 in Sioux City,
  7. Iowa, two years ago; in Seattle. On July 19, 1989, his DC-10's
  8. hydraulic power system failed when an engine exploded,
  9. paralyzing all the flight-control surfaces of the plane. Haynes
  10. and his crew managed to bring the craft down by alternately
  11. accelerating and decelerating the right and left engines. The
  12. plane caught fire during the landing, killing 112 people.
